Let's address the elephant in the room: it rains in Seattle. A lot. With an average of 152 rainy days per year, there's a real chance your Seattle wedding day will include some precipitation. But here's the secret that every experienced Seattle wedding photographer knows: rainy day wedding photos are often the most beautiful, dramatic, and memorable images in your entire gallery.
After photographing hundreds of weddings in Seattle, Tacoma, and throughout the PNW, many of them in rain, we can honestly say that some of our absolute best work has been captured under moody Pacific Northwest skies. Here's why you shouldn't worry — and how to embrace it.
Why Rain Creates Better Wedding Photos
The Light Is Actually Better
Overcast skies act as a giant natural softbox, creating soft, even, incredibly flattering light with no harsh shadows. This is the same type of lighting that portrait photographers pay thousands of dollars to recreate in a studio. Skin looks smooth, colors are rich, and there are no squinting faces from bright sun. Photographers actually prefer overcast days for portraiture.
Dramatic Atmosphere
Moody clouds, mist rolling through trees, rain drops on windows, reflections in puddles — these elements add depth, drama, and emotion to wedding photographs that sunny days simply can't match. There's a reason Pacific Northwest landscape photography is world-renowned — the weather creates stunning atmosphere.
Intimate Moments
Rain naturally brings couples closer together — sharing an umbrella, huddling under a covered porch, laughing as you dash through a drizzle. These authentic moments of connection and joy create images that feel genuine and deeply romantic.
Our Top Tips for Rainy Day Wedding Photos
1. Invest in Beautiful Umbrellas
Clear bubble umbrellas are a rainy day wedding photographer's best friend. They shelter you from rain while still allowing beautiful light through, and they photograph gorgeously. We always carry a set in our gear bag for Seattle weddings. White or clear umbrellas work best — avoid dark colors that cast unflattering shadows on faces.
2. Choose a Venue with Covered Outdoor Space
Many of Seattle's best wedding venues have covered porches, verandas, awnings, or overhangs that provide shelter while still feeling outdoors. These transition spaces are perfect for portraits when it's actively raining. The Foundry, Sodo Park, and many Snohomish barn venues have excellent covered areas.
3. Embrace the Drizzle for Portraits
If it's a light Seattle drizzle (which is usually is — Seattle rain is rarely torrential), we highly recommend stepping out for a quick 10-minute portrait session in it. The fine mist catches backlight beautifully, creating a magical, ethereal effect. A little rain in your hair adds texture and a natural, windswept beauty.
4. Use Window Light Indoors
Rainy days produce gorgeous, soft window light that's perfect for getting-ready photos and indoor portraits. Large windows with rain drops create beautiful foreground texture. We often photograph brides near windows during rain, using the droplets as a dreamy, bokeh-like effect.
5. Plan for Quick Outdoor Dashes
Seattle rain typically comes in waves with breaks in between. We monitor the weather radar throughout the day and take advantage of dry windows for outdoor portraits. Even 15 minutes of dry time between showers is enough for stunning outdoor couple portraits.
6. Bring the Right Footwear
Have rain boots or waterproof shoes available for walking between locations. Brides can wear boots under their dress (this actually looks amazing in photos!) and switch to heels for posed shots. Bring a towel and a second pair of shoes just in case.
